1981 Rolex Refinished Olive Dial Day-Date President Ref 18078 "Bark" Finish + Box!For your consideration, a gorgeous 1981 (6.5M Serial) Rolex President Ref 18078 – arguably the most iconic watch on the planet. The second in the lineage of the President line, the 18038/18078 features an upgraded, single quickset movement and sapphire crystal. The beautiful Day-Date before you here has a stunning refinished olive dial with stick indices. The dial is perfectly framed by Rolex’s solid gold fluted bezel from a datejust. No Day-Date is complete without the “I know that watch from 100 yards away” 18k solid gold, 3-link President-style bracelet, fit with the hidden clasp for a uniform, clean look throughout. The bracelet is hand finished by Rolex jewelers in what is called their "bark" finish -- a unique texturization process done in the 1980s to mimic tree bark. The Bark finish adds an heir of uniqueness you don't see in other Presidents. The bracelet is an OEM, Rolex solid 18k gold bracelet and shows some wear but almost no stretch (see photos). The bracelet fits just over a 7” wrist, which accommodates most wrists (note, if you have a larger wrist, I have additional links and other are easily available on ebay). The oyster case is in good condition, with wonderfully thick lugs and a few marks and wear in keeping with its age and use (see photos). The movement is tight, winds and runs nicely. The day and date complete their cycles and align perfectly with the apertures. The watch keeps great time. The crystal is brand new and in wonderful condition with no scratches or imperfections on its face. The beauty of the Rolex 18038/18078 line is that it is fitted with a Calibre 3055 perpetual movement; the heartbeat of the watch. A fifth-generation Day-Date movement, the calibre 3055 includes many modern luxuries, such as 28,800 bph and the addition of a Quickset function. The Quickset function allows the wearer to adjust the date aperture on the dial with a quick twist of the crown. Older, non-Quickset movements require the crown to be wound a full 24 hours to change the date. Adding to the collectability of this timepiece, the President will ship with the period correct Rolex box with its rare original insert (a valuable item in its own right).
